The Princess Birthday Ball

The huge, white tent sprawls on the lawn beside the lake. It has been transfigured there for a very special occasion. A stone walkway leads from the bar to the tent - the pavements are wide enough that ladies' dresses won't trail on the ground as they make their way to the entrance. Over the draped curtains of the entrance way is a large banner which reads "Happy 7th Birthday, Ingress".

Once inside, the honored guests will be in the midst of an enchanted ballroom. There are balloons drifting in bunches from the circular tables lining the sides of the large dance floor. Floating candlabras glow with gentle light from above. There are trees in large ornamental pots interspersed throughout sparkling with fairy lights from real fairies.

One long banquet table is positioned on along the side of the ballroom - there are treats of all description. Little finger sandwiches, chopped up fruit, cookies, cheese and crackers, and other child-friendly h'ors douerves are presented to make sure the dancers are sustained throughout the the party. There are large bowls of ice cream (kept cold with magic)and sundae fixings. Punch bowls of sherbet-flavored drinks await ladling into crystal goblets. But most impressive is the large birthday cake with blue, purple, and pink icing roses festooning it.

Ingress is busy greeting her guests in her gown - a birthday gift from Amy and Susan - but soon she'll be dancing to the music provided by the overlarge Gramophone in the corner, which is playing a wide array of dancing music from waltz standards to court music to pop hits of the 20th century.

Tom, who's pretty tired from the magical effort required to pull this off, is in the background making sure his little girl is having a perfect party, and Princess Amy is helping Ingress in her hostess duties.

Come in and enjoy the party!

Mendanbar is standing by the ice cream, debating the best combination for a sundae.

Feel free to offer advise.

Cora stares at the selection in confusion, and catches sight of him doing (what she presumes) the same.

"I don't think I'll ever see this many sweets in the same place again," she confides with a bit of wonder.

[OOC: I actually have to do something, but I'll be back in the half hour. :D]

"I don't think I have, either," he says, with a smile. "I think we're supposed to make sundaes, though I can't imagine what those are for." He frowns and points at a bowl of gummy worms.

"Mendanbar, of the Enchanted Forest, at your service."

"Well," she says, considering them with a long look, "I do hope they're not some form of candied worm. That would be..." disgusting"strange."

"I'm Cora, from Chipstede--in Narnia," she smiles at him, "please to meet you."

"It's an honor to make your acquaintance, Lady Cora," says Mendanbar.

He pokes skeptically at the worms.

"I think," he says, scooping vanilla ice cream into a bowl, "that I shall stick with chocolate sauce and nuts. Maybe a cherry, if I'm feeling frivilous."

"Just Cora," she corrects with a smile, before laughing slightly "well, maybe Lady Cora for the party."

"That seems wise," she carefully scoops some of her own ice cream, "the cherries, however, do look delicious."

She doesn't mention that she's never actually had ice cream before.

He grins and sets a cherry carefully atop her ice cream.

"They're candied, and I think titles are quite required for this particular party."

"Why, thank you--is it Lord?--Mendanbar," she smiles at the cherry in its precarious position, and adds some of the chocolate sauce sparingly around it. "Candied fruit I am familiar with, though."

"It's King, actually," says Mendanbar cheerfully. "But just Mendanbar generally."

He adds a couple of cherries to his own ice cream.

"Candied cherries go very well with ice cream."

"I shall remember," Cora promises with a slightly startled grin, "but I'm afraid you're stuck with it for today, King Mendanbar. There does seem to be an awful lot of royalty in Milliways," she adds thoughtfully.

And then blushes. "I've never, actually, had it before. But I'd think candied cherries would go with most things."

"I'd never thought about it before," says Mendanbar, "but you're right. I wonder why that is. Perhaps the Landlord is fond of crowns and circlets.

"And I think you're lucky. I don't remember the first time I ever had ice cream, and I'd rather wish I did. I assume that I was delighted by it, but I don't know. You'll get to remember."

“Most people seem to be,” she agrees with a laugh before eyeing the ice cream carefully.

Cora pokes it carefully with her spoon, smearing the chocolate sauce, “That’s probably a good way to look at it, though I assume that—like most desserts—it’s terribly sweet.”

Quite decisively she eats a spoonful of it, and her eyes widen.

"Well, it is sweet," he says, "but there is nothing terrible about ice cream."

He watches her try it, amused.

"It's a very difficult decision," says Cimorene, coming up behind him, "It's good that you're thinking it through with such thoroughness."

She grins.

"Well, there are so many choices," he says. He frowns at one of the bowls. "Including what appears to be oddly colored candied worms."

Re: The Guests Mingle Here

[identity profile] dragonvolunteer.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
She looks at them curiously. They do indeed appear to be worms. She picks one up. It is a rather disturbing shade of green on one end, and a rather disturbingly bright yellow on the other. Eh, what the heck. She pops it in her mouth and chews.

And chews.

"It's...very sweet," she manages eventually.

Mendanbar stares.

"You're braver than I am, Cimorene," he says, finally deciding to top his ice cream with chocolate sauce and nuts.

Re: The Guests Mingle Here

[identity profile] dragonvolunteer.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes.

Cimorene rather regrets the chewy worm thing now.

She fixes that regret with a chocolate cupcake. It has rainbow sprinkles. That makes it better.

"Candy at home does not taste anything like that," she says, a bit disapprovingly. "I think my teeth are going to fall out."

Cupcake to the rescue!

Mendanbar picks up a plate of cucumber sandwiches and holds it out to her.

"Something less sweet, perhaps," he suggest. "These appear to be candy worm-free."

Re: The Guests Mingle Here

[identity profile] dragonvolunteer.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Cimorene takes one gratefully.

"I don't object to candy on principle," she says, munching her sandwich, "though now I think I will have to object to candy that is that color."

She laughs, "Though perhaps when I was seven I would have felt entirely differently."

"Now, how are you this evening, Cimorene? Other than objecting to candy worms on the grounds of color?"

"Oh, I'm very well. It's a lovely party, isn't it? I finally met little Ingress, and she's simply adorable."

She smiles softly. "I've been looking forward to today. I haven't had terribly much to do since we got stuck here, so it's a welcome distraction."

Re: The Guests Mingle Here

"She's charming."

He gives her a sympathetic smile.

"I know it's been hard being stuck here, Cimorene. But perhaps we were simply meant not to miss the party, and will be able to go home soon."

Re: The Guests Mingle Here

[identity profile] dragonvolunteer.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope so. I wouldn't have wanted to miss this. Amy has been so excited about it, and I promised her I would come, but I don't think I could have stayed if I knew I could be out there helping Kazul."

She nods determinedly, "Besides, it's given me time to think up how many horrible names I can call Zemenar."
