Ingress loved staying with Amy and her family in Ambergelder. The dancing, the yummy feasts, the pretty dresses, having fun without thinking about anything but pleasant holiday thoughts. She was sad to leave, but she knew it was good to go back for Tom's birthday. It made Door smile, too, having her back. She missed them, too, of course, but she wasn't sad when it was time to go to Shadow with Sallie.

Shadow is totally different from Ambergelder. It's not as fancy, but there are things Ingress has never seen there. Megwyn has a nice stable to stay in, and plenty of hands to help take care of her. There's plenty of room to ride and race and explore.

And, of course, Sallie is there, and she keeps Ingress busy in very good ways. Today she's promised Ingress they'll bake a pie! She's never baked a pie before.

Ingress is reading a book on the sofa, waiting, and warming herself before the big fireplace. It's funny; the fire in the hearth looks a little like the fires she's seen wizards and witches step out of when visiting the Wizarding world with Tom. She wonders why, but mostly, she just enjoys sitting here, not having to be scared or worried. It's brilliant.

It's not the hardest thing in the world to distract a young girl from troubles.

Sallie misses the blue hair.

"Ingress?" Sallie's voice calls from behind the girl's perch on the sofa. "Did we decide what kind o' filling we're to be making tonight?"

"Don't see why not," Sallie shrugs gamefully, already planning ahead to something more akin to a cobbler than a traditional pie.

"First thing we're going to be needing I think is an apron," Sallie declares, sizing Ingress up. "Wouldn't want you getting a mess all over yourself. I think I have extras on one of the shelves in the pantry."

"I've...I've got to admit I've never really thought on them like that much, Ingress. Thank you," Sallie laughs. "Now here's the big question.

"You ever messed with bread dough before at all? I don't know how much Door and Tom actually cook for themselves."

It's an easy arrangement, woman and child, in the kitchen. The stool that Sallie uses to reach up into the cabinets lining the upper walls of the kitchen makes for a good step for Ingress to the countertop. Sallie demonstrates the importance of flour against the rolling pin and dough both, leaving Ingress to rolling and dough-beating while Sallie starts the filling on the stove.

"How's it comin' over there baobei?"

"Well, we're goin' to use the leftovers for the top of the pie, if that's what we end up wanting to do." Sallie perhaps wisely chooses to supervise the transfer of the dough into a pie shell, trimming the edges for later use.

"So." Calmer. "How was Tom's birthday?"

"Because of those men."

It's not really a question that needs answering.

"You know you can stay here as long as you want to," Sallie starts quietly, "and everyone's makin' sure that Milliways is as safe for you as possible."

Sallie slouches a little, leaning her elbows on the countertop when she nods.

"You know Mal was a soldier, right? I was really scared for him, when he went away to the army."

"Well."

("You won't have a home to come back to, Malcolm.")

"I couldn't do much of anything. He was his own person; I couldn't stop him from doing what he wanted to do, even if I didn't like it."

Sallie's starting to question why she's telling Ingress all of this, but it stops eventually.

She is a big girl after all.

"I cried. I think I fired some folk what didn't deserve it.

"I tried to wake up in the morning and find something that made me happy while he was away. It got easier."

From Sallie's hunched position she straightens herself to plant a small kiss on the top of Ingress' artificially-normalized hair.

Smiling at her in that way you see parents smile when their children piece things together: "I think so, yes. I'm a horrible liar."
