Slumber Birthday Party

The tea party room in the House of Arch has been re-arranged. The chests of dress-up clothes are still there, but the large table is gone. In its place are comfy, overstuffed chairs, a long sofa, and several cushions and bean bags scattered about. There is a small table loaded with snacks like crisps, dips, cupcakes, candy, and soda. There's also a veggie tray and cheese and crackers for all of those over age eight.

An old model TV hooked up to VCR is set up with several video cassettes of movies such as The Aristocats, Sleeping Beauty, Shirley Temple classics, and other fun viewing choices.

Tom and Door have been busy escorting guests into the House, if they didn't already have access on their own, and the birthday girl greets them with squeeful happiness. Megwyn is already there, standing by a basket of fresh hay and apples. Even Companions need treats.

She is wearing pajamas with unicorns on them with a fluffy yellow robe on over. She is very excited and feeling very grown up. She's going to stay up all night.

Makeovers!!!!

There is a box of makeup and fingernail polish beside one of the trunks of dress-up clothes. The trunks themselves are overflowing with old silk and velvet gowns of many eras, as well as more modern accoutrements such as boas, shawls, and floppy hats.

Have at it!

Mary is eyeing the assorted items very warily indeed.

"What is all of this for?"

"It's for dress up! And look-" She holds up tubes and bottles of glisteny pink. "We have makeup."

Or, at least, lip gloss and fingernail polish.

Mary frowns. She doesn't have anything against pink, but it might be nice to at least see some other colors represented.

"There might be some red or black," she says, rummaging through the box. "Oh, here's some purple varnish!"

The makeup palette is a wee bit limited in the Underside.

"Varnish is what they put on wood," Mary objects - not out of contrariness, but in confusion.

She doesn't think she needs to be varnished!

"No, no, it's called nail varnish. It's for your fingernails."

She giggles.

"Or your toenails!"

She has spent most of the evening either standing to one side of the room or lying down in an empty space, but at the sight of Ingress and others looking in the old trunks, Megwyn snorts in amusement.

Ingress has purple fingernails, an updo, and sparkly powder on her face. She's still rummaging through the trunk, looking for the mate to a particularly lovely left slipper she's wearing.

When she hears Megwyn snort, she grins and scurries over to Door, whispering in her ear.

They both return, Ingress with a brush in her hand.

Door's voice is friendly, if slightly polite, and she's smiling.

"Ingress is bound and determined that your makeover will be the best this party sees."

"Door, would it be okay to paint her hooves, do you think?" She's brandishing the same purple polish that's on her nails.

Door does not know much about horses.

The Underside, on the whole, has little use for them.

There's a luxuriously fringed purple shawl dropped over Ingress's head from behind.

And a suspiciously familiar giggle.

This giggle is answered by another.

"River! You came!"

She spins around and gives her a hug.

"It's your party." Duh, River's voice implies, but she's grinning.

After a motionless moment of blinking, she hugs back.

"We can trade," she offers hopefully.

"Oh yes. And then we can have cupcakes. There are two kinds - chocolate and lemon."

'Dora's industriously trimming a broad-brimmed hat with electric green ribbon and dyed ostrich feathers. Finally she places it on her head and models it in front of the full-length mirror, tweaking it this way and that.

"Needs more feathers," she finally announces. At her feet, Ellie wuffles approvingly.

Ingress is dripping in finery. It's a bit heavy, in fact, so she's sitting on the floor with her arms around Ellie's neck.

"'Dora, can you make your hair blue, too? It would be preeeetty with the hat."

"Oh, good call. Then you and Ellie and I will match."

Screwing up her face, 'Dora changes her hair to a bright sky blue, and then strikes a dramatic pose.

"So?"

"We're the blue-haired, birthday princesses!"

Nymphadora eases herself down to the ground, a hand on her rapidly swelling belly.

"Too bad we can't turn your hair colors yet, baby Charlotte."

"Anthony can't change his colors, but will Charlotte be able to?"

This is very exciting! She doesn't know anyone else who can change colors - change everything - like 'Dora can.
