Slumber Birthday Party

The tea party room in the House of Arch has been re-arranged. The chests of dress-up clothes are still there, but the large table is gone. In its place are comfy, overstuffed chairs, a long sofa, and several cushions and bean bags scattered about. There is a small table loaded with snacks like crisps, dips, cupcakes, candy, and soda. There's also a veggie tray and cheese and crackers for all of those over age eight.

An old model TV hooked up to VCR is set up with several video cassettes of movies such as The Aristocats, Sleeping Beauty, Shirley Temple classics, and other fun viewing choices.

Tom and Door have been busy escorting guests into the House, if they didn't already have access on their own, and the birthday girl greets them with squeeful happiness. Megwyn is already there, standing by a basket of fresh hay and apples. Even Companions need treats.

She is wearing pajamas with unicorns on them with a fluffy yellow robe on over. She is very excited and feeling very grown up. She's going to stay up all night.

Alanna arrives early, dressed comfortably in loose linen trousers and shirt, carrying a bag, a baby carrier and Grace in a sling. Slumber parties are a new experience, but she's willing to try anything for Ingress.

"This looks like the correct place," she says, grinning, from just behind the birthday girl.

Amy, with an already sleepy Susan in one arm, and a large basket of flowers from the Palace Gardens in the other, gives Ingess a very bright smile.

"Happy birthday, darling."

"Amy!" She carefully hugs mother and daughter. "I'm glad you came. Do you think Susan likes cats? I have a cat movie to watch."

Marian has not been having the best last few weeks, which makes her a little reluctant to appear, but she finds early on it s rather impossible not to smile at an exuberant young child dressed up in fluffy, unicorn covered, pajamas.

"Fair eve, I hope I'm not too late."

"No, you're just on time. I'm so glad you could come! I hoped you would, so we could have our birthdays together!"

She takes Marian's hand and pulls her toward the treat table.

Makeovers!!!!

There is a box of makeup and fingernail polish beside one of the trunks of dress-up clothes. The trunks themselves are overflowing with old silk and velvet gowns of many eras, as well as more modern accoutrements such as boas, shawls, and floppy hats.

"What is all of this for?"

"It's for dress up! And look-" She holds up tubes and bottles of glisteny pink. "We have makeup."

Or, at least, lip gloss and fingernail polish.

She has spent most of the evening either standing to one side of the room or lying down in an empty space, but at the sight of Ingress and others looking in the old trunks, Megwyn snorts in amusement.

Ingress has purple fingernails, an updo, and sparkly powder on her face. She's still rummaging through the trunk, looking for the mate to a particularly lovely left slipper she's wearing.

When she hears Megwyn snort, she grins and scurries over to Door, whispering in her ear.

They both return, Ingress with a brush in her hand.

There's a luxuriously fringed purple shawl dropped over Ingress's head from behind.

And a suspiciously familiar giggle.

"River! You came!"

She spins around and gives her a hug.

'Dora's industriously trimming a broad-brimmed hat with electric green ribbon and dyed ostrich feathers. Finally she places it on her head and models it in front of the full-length mirror, tweaking it this way and that.

"Needs more feathers," she finally announces. At her feet, Ellie wuffles approvingly.

Ingress is dripping in finery. It's a bit heavy, in fact, so she's sitting on the floor with her arms around Ellie's neck.

"'Dora, can you make your hair blue, too? It would be preeeetty with the hat."

Story Time

It's gotten later, the lights are dimmed, and it's time for stories. There's a flashlight to shine in one's face, if one is telling a spoooooky story.

Marian decides early on it's story time, both to make up for her lateness and because she'd been reading a lot of strange fiction in Milliways while not heading home, and grabbed the flash light while calling for everyone to gather round.

Once they'd all settled down Marian nodded for one of the other adults to turn off the light, flicking on the flashlight as she began speaking.

"She lived deep in the forest in a tiny cottage and sold herbal remedies for a living. Folks living in the town nearby called her Bloody Mary, and said she was a witch. None dared cross the old crone for fear that their cows would go dry, their food-stores rot away before winter, their children take sick of fever, or any number of terrible things that an angry witch could do to her neighbors.

Then the little girls in the village began to disappear, one by one. No one could find out where they had gone. Grief-stricken families searched the woods, the local buildings, and all the houses and barns, but there was no sign of the missing girls. A few brave souls even went to Bloody Mary's home in the woods to see if the witch had taken the girls, but she denied any knowledge of the disappearances. Still, it was noted that her haggard appearance had changed. She looked younger, more attractive. The neighbors were suspicious, but they could find no proof that the witch had taken their young ones."

Ingress gasps, her eyes wide. "What happened next?"

She knows some witches. They are very nice people. This sounds like one from the stories who bears no resemblance to the real ones.

One not so scary as Bloody Mary, in other words. Just a little bit scary.

"Or, if you don't know ones like that, one about a brave girl."

And after a few of the stories, especially the scarier ones, there's a young wizard talking the wall into opening up, just a little bit. A tiny hole, only big enough for a few half-grown rats to scuttle through.

Gavroche stays where he is, to watch.

The adults in attendance will have much to discuss, especially if Ingress is watching an old Disney movie.

Eventually, Alanna takes Grace home and returns carrying much less than on her previous visit. She smiles fondly at Ingress and looks around, idly snacking on a cupcake. She likes the frosting; it disappears first.

Amy has gotten a now very sleepy Susan settled, dozing on a bean bag.

She's found a glass of ginger ale and some crackers, but she's always happer to chat.

It's what a party is for, after all.
